(CNN) -- A national trade organization is reminding families to be careful while they recycle the packaging from Christmas gifts.

The American Forest and Paper Association shared a for homes looking to get rid of wrapping paper and other items.

The organization strongly advises against what it calls "wish-cycling." They say that's when you put something in the recycling bin and hope someone else figures out what to do with it.

The AFPA notes while many packaging items like the boxes, bags, and wrappings are made from paper, not everything is. Products like ribbons and bows may be considered non-recyclables.

Some holiday cards may also fall under that category if they contain glitter, plastic or metallic accents.

They advise families to read the tips at this before filling their recycling bins.
