PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- After Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear the next phase of reopening the state's economy, Paducah city officials acted swiftly.

City manager Jim Arndt says discussions about closing certain streets in the downtown area came up during the governor's announcement. Market House Square & Broadway is a possibility, but Arndt says it's still up in the air.

"We're still trying to figure out how to make that work while acknowledging the appropriate social distancing for public health," Arndt said, adding the city wants to make sure that gatherings of more than 10 people are avoided.

Arndt says the idea received positive support from restaurant owners, but issues like safety remain paramount. He says it's going to be all hands on deck for employees in public works and park maintenance.

"[We're] making sure that we have the barricades in place, making sure we have fire lanes established.. [and] adequate seating at tables," Arndt said.

At Tuesday night's meeting, the Paducah Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to authorize Arndt to temporarily close down certain downtown streets to help restaurants adjust to the state's new requirements.

At the teleconference, Arndt told commissioners he's still waiting on more local feedback and state guidelines about selling alcohol. He hasn't said which roads would close and a date for that plan has yet to be revealed.

Starting May 22, Kentucky is allowing restaurants to reopen dining rooms at 33% capacity. Outdoor seating capacity has no limit as long as restaurants follow social distancing guidelines of at least six feet.
