Triple A-“Don’t rely on your car’s ‘miles to empty indicator

(WSIL) -- AAA is warning drivers to not be too reliant on your in-dash fuel economy display. Recent testing has shown that the "miles-to-empty" indicator can have irregularities that can have an impact on the accuracy of those instruments. Mechanics at The Auto Shop in Carbondale tell News 3, letting your tank get to empty can cause more damage than just leaving you stranded on the side of the road.

"Fuel actually cools the fuel pump. So it can overheat the fuel pump and reduce its life. Like I said sediments can pull up, each time you fuel up a little bit of dirt falls in there and when the fuel level gets low it draws those sediments up and can damage the fuel pump." said Cody Rennison, Shop Foreman at the Auto Shop.

To avoid that damage, Rennison says you should always keep at least a quarter of a tank in your car.
