HARRISBURG (WSIL) -- A former Harrisburg doctor has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of his estranged wife.
Brian Burns, 61, was sentenced Tuesday in Saline County Court.
Burns was found guilty in December of first degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death in the death of Carla Burns.
On March 10, 2016, the Marion Police Department received several calls concerning the whereabouts of Carla Burns. Brian Burns was arrested and charged with her murder six days later.
During his trial, Burns claimed Carla’s death was an accident. Prosecutors argued Brian Burns shot and killed Carla then burned her body.
Burns' sentencing hearing was rescheduled several times, most recently in June. That hearing was postponed after Burns' defense attorney claimed he didn't receive notice.
Burns is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for the attempted kidnapping of the former Saline County State's Attorney.
