MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A Carbondale man was sentenced to a decade behind bars after pleading guilty on robbery and burglary charges.
Juan Rivera Marrero, 31, was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections for 10 years for a robbery charge and two counts of burglary out of Jackson County, according to Jackson County State's Attorney Joeseph Cervantez.
In one occasion, Carbondale Police Officers responded to the Super 8 Hotel at 1180 E. Main Street for an 83-year-old who was robbed. Cervantez explained there was surveillance video where the suspect, Juan Rivera Marrero, shoved the 83-year-old down to the ground and stole his wallet before running away. Carbondale police were able to catch up to him outside the Chili's restaurant in Carbondale.
One burglary charge was from September 17, near the 300-block of East Main Street in Carbondale where Juan Rivera Marrero was then suspected of breaking into a vehicle in a parking lot of the Auto Repair Shop. A necklace, sunglasses and other items were taken. Officers took him into custody then as well.
On May 11, 2023, at 317 East Main Street in Carbondale, video surveillance shows someone breaking into a vehicle and taking items out. Juan Rivera Marrero pleaded guilty in this case, however, he was resentenced after recent incidents where his probation was revoked.
The Defendant was sentenced to 10 years in IDOC for the robbery charge and six years in IDOC for the two burglary charges. All are to run concurrent with two years of mandatory supervised release.
