JOHNSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- The three year court battle following a deadly crash involving an off duty law enforcement officer has reached its end.
Cyle Harner, a former deputy in Johnson County, Illinois, went before a judge Friday afternoon for sentencing.
In March of 2018, Harner crashed a truck that killed 24-year-old passenger Troy Newman. That crash also seriously injured Harner and another passenger.
During Harner's time in court,
At the time of the crash, he worked as a K-9 deputy for Johnson County
and his father was the Sheriff.
In November, a judge found him guilty on all three charges. Friday he was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
and two years mandatory supervised release.
The sentencing was in-person, only allowing 25 people inside the courtroom due to COVID restrictions.
The defense requested an appeal bond, which would allow Harner to be released during the appeal process, but the judge denied it.
