Georgia man arrested in Carbondale for illegal firearm possession, police say

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Police in Carbondale arrested a Georgia man following a reported disturbance on the 700-block of South Lewis Lane on May 21.

Officers identified the suspect as 26-year-old Marques A. Estes of Mableton, Georgia.

Authorities said Estes was involved in a physical dispute with a known acquaintance. Upon locating Estes, officers said they discovered he possessed a firearm.

When taking Estes into custody, police said he resisted arrest, however, officers were able to then arrest him without further incident.

During the arrest, officers reported finding a firearm which they stated was illegally converted to fire automatically.

Estes was cited with multiple charges, including Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, and Resisting or Obstructing a Peace Officer.

He was then taken to the Jackson County Jail.

The Carbondale Police Department encourages anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
