MOUND CITY (WSIL) -- Illinois State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday night in Mound City.

On Tuesday, around 10 p.m., ISP was requested by the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department to investigate a shooting that occurred in the 700 block of Pearl Street.

In the wake of a fire at a home earlier in the evening, a Pulaski County deputy was at the scene investigating. ISP says a brief physical altercation with several people and the deputy took place when they attempted to obstruct the investigation.

The deputy eventually detained a woman and placed her in the back seat of his squad car. While the deputy was taking a second person into custody, an unknown suspect shot in the deputy's direction.

The woman detained in the squad car was struck by the gunfire. She was taken to a regional hospital for treatment and released. The deputy and the second suspect he was taking into custody were uninjured.
