New details released in fatal Carterville officer-involved shooting

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- Illinois State Police investigators are releasing more details in an officer-involved shooting in Carterville.

On Tuesday, July 6 around 2:55 p.m. Carterville officers responded to a report of a man with a gun outside of a home in the 200 block of Dobson Street.

A preliminary investigation revealed two responding Carterville officers encountered a man with a shotgun on a front porch of the home. Officers repeatedly ordered the man to put down the gun, instead he raised the firearm towards officers.

The man, later identified as Joseph D. McGrath, 52 of Carterville, was struck by gunfire from Carterville officers and died from his injuries.

McGrath was pronounced dead by the Williamson County coroner at the scene. The officers were uninjured.
