Southern Illinois man attacked with bat in his home while sleeping, police say. Suspect in custody

METROPOLIS, Ill. (WSIL) -- Authorities responded to a violent incident in the 1800 block of Ferry Street where police said a man was attacked in his home on April 21.

The Metropolis Police Department reported the victim was asleep in the living room his apartment when he was hit three times in the head with a baseball bat. Police said the suspect also fired two shots at the victim but did not hit him.

The suspect was identified as James H. Smith, 65, from Metropolis.

Police said they set up surveillance at Hummas Apartments while obtaining search warrants. Smith was observed leaving the complex and was taken into custody.

During the search, officers said they found a baseball bat and ammunition which matched the casings found at the crime scene.

Smith was booked at the Massac County Detention Center and cited on home invasion, aggravated battery and aggravated assault charges.
