CHARLESTON, Mo. (WSIL) -- Authorities are investigating an incident where a student reportedly fired a gun at the Charleston High School football field.
Police in Charleston responded to the school Tuesday around 3 p.m. The police department stated they have a suspect in custody and also said a handgun was found nearby at the scene.
Investigators learned there was a fight in the men's restroom at the football field. During this time, a 14-year-old pulled out a handgun and a shot was fired in the process, police noted.
There were no reported injuries.
Police later learned the handgun had been stolen out of Sikeston, Missouri.
The suspect is being held at the Mississippi County Juvenile Detention Facility. He will be referred to the Juvenile Court on charges of assault, weapons violations and possessing a stolen firearm.聽
Charleston R-1 Schools stated on their Facebook page they are closing school on Wednesday, March 27, and on Thursday, March 28, to "discuss strengthening safety protocol."
The school cancellation is for the Charleston Jr./Sr. High School, Charleston Middle School and Warren E. Hearnes Elementary School.
