CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Sunday marked day two in Carbondale's Eleven Days for Peace program.

Dozens of community members made their way to St. Francis Xavier Church for a Pot Luck celebrating the occassion.

Leaders from the Southern Illinois Immigrants Rights Project and the church worked together to host the event, and anyone was welcome to attend.

Carbondale's Eleven Days for Peace program has been going on for eight years now, where a different set of events take place throughout the city each day; the goal: to promote activities that foster non-violent and compassionate interactions.

Organizers say addressing violence and building relationships is a way to create peace in local neighborhoods.

"[It's important] to also think about opportunities for people, especially our young people; sometimes young people get involved in criminal situations because of a lack of opportunities or a sense of lack of opportunities, so I think events that happen around eleven days for peace can illustrate all the positive things in a community that people can get involved with," says volunteer Jess Jobe.

There are more than 30 events taking place over the course of Carbondale's Eleven Days for Peace.

You can find a list of those events at the program's website:
