CARTERVILLE, Ill (WSIL) - The sounds of choir harmonies and the scent of international cuisine filled the air at John A. Logan College today during the school’s annual World Music and Food Day. The event welcomed students, faculty, and community members of all ages to experience the rich traditions of cultures from around the world.
From the sizzle of Caribbean jerk chicken to the spice of some tasty Thai treats, attendees sampled a flavorful spectrum of dishes prepared with pride.
“It’s my favorite event of the year,â€ said one student. The food is a big draw, but it’s really about how everyone comes together. Selena Rogers is a student and the president of the international club and she says "It's an opportunity to learn and celebrate each others culturesâ€ says Rogers.Â
Colorful flags from around the world lined the ceilings as the festival came alive with live music, storytelling, and traditional dances. Young women wearing vibrant cultural dresses twirled in rhythm alongside boys dressed in traditional shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats.
The college choir added their own flair to the celebration, performing songs that carried stories of community and shared history.
Organizers say the goal is not just to entertain, but to educate and unite, reminding attendees of the beauty found in cultural exchange.
And with another successful year in the books, organizers are already looking forward to next year.
