SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WSIL) -- Illinois has more school districts than any other state, but that could change.
also known as the "Classrooms First Act" would cut the number of districts by at least 25 percent. There are 852 school districts in Illinois right now.
According to the 46 percent of Illinois School districts serve only one or two schools.
The Illinois House Elementary and Secondary Education committee discussed the bill virtually on Wednesday.
It would create a commission that would recommend consolidation options to lawmakers.
Rep. Rita Mayfield, (D-Waukegan) first filed the bill in January.
Since then there have been thousands of people who have weighed in. She says school superintendents have been opposed to the plan
During Wednesday's virtual hearing she said that was because "they want to keep their jobs."
Advocates say consolidation could save more than $700 million per year by reducing administrative spending to the national average per student.Â
The committee voted to approve the bill, but an amendment is already being considered, and it could end up back in the committee's hands at a later date.
