NEW MADRID, Mo. (WSIL) River officials are on the scene trying to mitigate the flow of water and any potential damages after floodwaters overtopped a ditch in New Madrid County on Sunday.
The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office said the incident took place late Sunday afternoon in the lower part of the county.
A representative with the Little River Drainage District said their crew has removed debris from the area and there is about six inches deep of water flowing smoothly over the top bank of the ditch at this time. The representative said the ditch itself should be fine as it is has clay and rock within the levee.
The Little River Drainage District says the water should stop overtopping sometime on Monday.
Highway 62 is still open for traffic as the roadway is higher than the grounds around it and floodwaters should not overtop it, the representative said. MoDOT crews are on standby if any road signage needs to be put in place.
