CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- It's the time of year when many people enjoy the great outdoors.
National Get Outdoors Day is celebrated on the second Saturday in June. It's a nationwide event organized by the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable and the U.S. Forest Service.
To celebrate the big day, will hold a special event Saturday, June 12 from 1 until 4.
The park will have informational booths at the visitor's center and will go over how you can make the most out of Mother Nature in Southern Illinois. Some of those booths include the Shawnee National Forest, Green Earth and Hiking with Shawn. They'll even have a kid's activity table!
"There are so many outdoor recreational opportunities here. Not just here at Giant City but the Shawnee National Forest, we've got wildlife refuges, so there are lots of opportunities. I just really want people to realize what there is to do here outdoors in southern Illinois," says Jennifer Randolph-Bollinger, Natural Resources Coordinator at Giant City.
Randolph-Bollinger say now that restrictions are being lifted, they want to see you. Saturday's event is for both new and experienced outdoor enthusiasts. You can head out this Saturday from one to four in the afternoon.
For more information contact the visitor center at (618) 457-4836.
Also on National Get Outdoors Day, the Shawnee National Forest will be waiving fees for some recreational areas.
