(WSIL) -- Winter weather is a time where a lot of people will most likely walk in and out getting last minute groceries.
Many parking lots at shopping centers like those might not be cleared of ice and snow like the main roads and it's important to be careful when walking outside.
The Carbondale Neighborhood Co-Op general manager says the landlord for his building has been putting salt on the sidewalk and they're keeping the entrance clear to prevent slipping.
Wellness experts say its best to use the "penguin walk" when walking, which is simply walking slowly, point your toes out slightly, and taking small steps.

We asked customers if they heard about this method and one of them said it can be effective.
"I would say that it definitely allows you to have more balance and more control because trying to walk regular speed in this snow…you're definitely going to risk falling," said shopper, Jawhar McClendon.
According to the CDC, falls are the third-leading cause of unintentional deaths.
The most important thing to do is protect your head.
If you fall backwards, try to tuck your chin so your head won’t hit the ground. Also wearing a heavy, bulky coat will cushion you.
