Southern Illinois Healthcare and the Region V Regional Hospital Coordinating Center team up with a dozen high schoolers.

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) --- Southern Illinois Healthcare and the Region V Regional Hospital Coordinating Center team up with a dozen high schoolers. SIH and the RHCC donated a large amount of medical supplies to the Hands of Hope Foundation in Marion.

Crystal Crim with the RHCC says all medical supplies are considered expired by U.S. Law, but they're still good and can be used overseas.

"All of these students that you see here want to go into the medical field. So this involves them; it shows them what we do out here," Crim said.

Students from the Vienna High School helped by sorting, taking inventory, and boxing up supplies. Ariel Board is a Senior at Vienna High School. She says she already has her CNA license and some healthcare experience.

"It's kinda good to get out the house during our spring break, but I'm a medical nerd, so being able to come here and see all the supplies has been super fun," Board said.

Vienna's School nurse says getting outside the classroom is very important for healthcare.

"If we can get them in real life experiences now, while they're in high school, then they're ready for the next career step and that can hopefully save them money and time," Smith said.

The founder of Hands of Hope, Troy Benitone, said in a phone interview that it's fantastic to get young people involved.

Benitone said the supplies will be given to two clinics in Liberia, Africa, and the foundation sends at least one full container annually.
