CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- Doctors will tell you, what you eat can hurt or help chronic illnesses.

A unique new program in Southeast Missouri is helping tackle that issue with free healthy food.

The received a grant through to give out boxes of fresh produce and lean protein each month.

The food bank partnered with which chose the participants based on chronic health issues.

Seventy-five people across five southeast Missouri counties will receive a box of food during the nine-month "Farmacy" program.

Lisa Church of the SEMO Food Bank says without the grant participants they would not be able to offer the fresh produce.

"If we didn't have donors, if we didn't have funders these services wouldn't exist. So it really takes a team to make all of that happen," says Church.

She adds, there is still room for those who want to apply for the food baskets.
