HERRIN, Ill. (WSIL)Â -- A local elementary school helped raise more than $1,300 for the Salvation Army recently. It was all part of an event where all the classrooms tried to see who could give back the most, with one grade class raising more than $200.
The winning class raised more than $200 and were surprised with a special treat.
Mr. Robinette's 5th grade class at Herrin Elementary School raised the money to help out those in need through the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign.
In turn, members with the Salvation Army wanted showed their appreciation to the students by bringing donuts for the whole class on Wednesday.
Ellie Bink is a student in the class. She said she is happy to help give back.
"I felt happy that we donated that much so we can help families in need," Bink said. "Stuff like the donut party is really cool but, I felt helping with the donations are better."
Members with the Salvation Army also talked with the students about what they do and how they could help even more. Colete Caplinger from Salvation Army said she has hope for the future.
"It was really heart warming," said Caplinger. "I mean they made my day today; to see how engaged these children are in giving back, but, also wanting to know how can they give back even more to their community and wanting to understand what it is exactly what we do," added Caplinger. "They were really engaged and truly these kids really care and I think that is a pretty amazing thing."
