SPRINGFIELD (ILLINOIS CAPITOL BUREAU) -- Today's Challenge, Tomorrow's Reward is the motto for the Illinois Department of Transportation's 30th annual conference. This year, the group got an assist from inspirational basketball coach Ken Carter.
Coach Carter is known for leading the Richmond High School boys basketball team in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His dedication to the team's academic success inspired Hollywood to make the 2005 movie "Coach Carter" with Samuel L. Jackson. Carter shocked many when he suspended his entire undefeated team in 1999 for failing to meet his academic requirements.
"See a punishment lasts you one day, one week, one month," Carter said. "A discipline can last you a lifetime. So my whole thing with my team and my life is about discipline. I try to keep people healthy mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially."
Carter adds average isn't good enough for anyone and you have to live life to the fullest while you can.
"One thing about this thing called life, Springtime has always followed Winter since the beginning of time. No matter what type of day you're having or what type of situation you're in, if you can endure you can win because Springtime is coming," Carter explained.
Coach also says it is important to let people know they are appreciated.
