MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- A local sheriff's office wants the public to be extra cautious near icy ponds and lakes as they can be dangerous.

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said there are a significant amount of lakes, streams and ponds in the area which can be potentially dangerous in the winter months.

The Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich says it's important for residents, and especially parents, to ensure nobody tries walking on the icy bodies of water.

“Ice in Williamson County rarely freezes sufficiently to safely bear weight. Please stay off all frozen surfaces, stated Sheriff Jeff Diederich.

Sheriff Diederich says we often have a limited amount of freezing temperatures and frozen bodies of water in southern Illinois; thus contributing to icy lakes and ponds being unstable.

The sheriff's office says if you see any unsafe activity, such as children playing on ice, to contact the Williamson County Sheriff's Office at 618-997-6541. Of course if an emergency happens, you are urged to call 911.
