BENTON, Ill. (WSIL) -- New body scanning technology was implemented in one local jail to help eliminate any potential unwanted items coming through.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office said they have purchased the Tek84 Body Scanner. This will be used to help scan the full body for any metallic and non-metallic items. This includes weapons, cell phones, drugs, along with other items.

The sheriff's office describes it as a quick 4-second scan in the entry way to the jail and booking process.

Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon states any contraband has been difficult to control in a jail setting and has been more of an issue with any drugs in concealed items.

This body scanner is designed to help keep everyone safer, including correctional officers, healthcare staff, law enforcement officers and anyone else in the jail facility.

It's a $141,500 purchase by the sheriff's office in Franklin County made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act Funds, Opioid Abatement Funds, along with other grant funding.

The sheriff's office stated there were no tax dollars used for the purchase of this equipment and thanks everyone for their support of this project.
