Marion honors tornado victims with Tower Square bell ceremony

MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- The City of Marion will honor the 10 lives lost in the devastating F-4 "Marion Tornado" by ringing the bell 10 times at Tower Square Plaza on May 29, 2025, at 3:16 p.m.

This event marks the 43rd anniversary of the tornado that struck on May 29, 1982.

The tornado began just outside of Cambria and carved a destructive path through Route 13 directly into Marion. It left a lasting impact on the community by ravaging shopping centers, businesses, homes, and apartments.

On that tragic day, 10 individuals lost their lives and 136 were injured. Many residents faced the challenge of rebuilding after losing their homes and businesses.

The community of Marion was forever changed, but not broken.

The resilience and strength of Marion's spirit ensured recovery and growth, demonstrating the town's determination.

Advancements in forecasting technology and warning systems over the past 43 years have contributed to safer future generations.

Marion pays tribute to those lost and extends gratitude to the heroes who stepped up in the community's time of need.

The legacy of resilience, hope, and community continues to inspire Marion today.
