Missing man found dead in Jackson County

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Police in Carbondale updated a missing person's case from mid-August.

The Carbondale Police Department said Richard E. Slomkowski, 67 of Carbondale, was found dead on October 5.

Police said their detectives, along with the Jackson County Coroner's Office and Jackson County Sheriff's Office, responded to an area between North Oakland Street and New Era Road for a deceased person report at around 2:20 p.m. on October 5.

Later, the body was identified as Richard E. Slomkowski, police further detailed as part of their investigation. No foul play was suspected as well.

The City of Carbondale said they appreciate everyone's assistance and extends its deepest sympathies to Richard’s family and loved ones.

Carbondale Police Chief and Interim City Manager Stan Reno said, "The City of Carbondale Police Department is deeply saddened by the discovery of Richard Slomkowski. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. We are grateful for the assistance provided by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, and all those who contributed to the search efforts. While no foul play is suspected and the death appears to be accidental, our investigation remains ongoing. We encourage anyone with information to contact the Carbondale Police Department. Your support and cooperation are greatly appreciated."
