JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- Authorities responded to a two-vehicle crash on Monday morning on Highway 51 south of Elkville, involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office stated a black Mazda crossed into the northbound lane and collided tractor-trailer, driven by a 37-year-old from Grand Tower.
After the collision, the sheriff's office said the tractor-trailer overturned, and the Mazda caught fire. The driver of the Mazda was reported dead at the scene, while the truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance.
Traffic on Highway 51 was closed and redirected for about five hours to clear the roadway. The investigation is ongoing, with the Traffic Crash Reconstruction team and Illinois State Police.
