JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. -- One person is dead and two others injured after a crash between a vehicle and horse drawn buggy on Monday.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report of a vehicle vs horse drawn buggy crash in the area of Log Cabin Lane and Goshen Road at 4:49 p.m. on September 9.

Deputies, along with members of Jefferson County Fire Protection District and Litton Ambulance, all responded to the scene.

The sheriff's office reported a 32-year old female from Ina was driving a white Dodge van and hit the horse drawn buggy which was driven by a 20-year-old from Belle Rive, Illinois.

The Dodge crashed into the rear part of the horse drawn buggy and caused major damage, the sheriff's office detailed in a report.

Authorities said two passengers and the driver were all seriously injured in the buggy.

The driver and one of the passengers of the horse drawn buggy were flown to a hospital in St. Louis for treatment. The sheriff's office said the other passenger, identified as Elma Mast, 18 of Belle Rive, was taken to SSM Good Samaritan Hospital and declared dead shortly after arriving there.

The driver and a juvenile passenger in the Dodge were not seriously injured according to the sheriff's office report.

The sheriff's office also said the horse was injured in the crash as well. The Mast family came to the scene and assisted with the recovery of the injured horse.

This crash is still under investigation.

"The Sheriff and his staff send their deepest condolences to the Mast family during this time of tragedy," the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office stated on their Facebook page. "May God’s Grace cover them in their time of need."
