K-9 Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

ROCKFORD, Ill. —A domestic violence call Sunday escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of K-9 Nyx and injuring a suspect.

Though the investigation is ongoing, the Winnebago County State's Attorney and the Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force provided preliminary information into the officer involved shooting incident.

On January 28 around 1:46 p.m., Rockford Police Officers responded to the 3000 block of Jacqueline Drive for a report of domestic violence.

When officers arrived on the scene, they spoke with a victim who reported that she was involved in a verbal argument with Malik Trotter.

Trotter then left the apartment with the victim's phone.

The victim also told authorities that her son heard three gunshots before Trotter left the area.

Around 3:15 p.m., the victim told authorities that through phone app Life 360, her phone was located at a business in the 2800 block of 11th Street.

Rockford Police Officer Vargas and K-9 Nyx responded to the location and found Trotter, who began to run away.

Officer Vargas and Nyx followed Trotter over a fence where K-9 Nyx caught up to the suspect.

Before Officer Vargas was able to catch up to K-9 Nyx and Trotter, he heard three gunshots.

As Officer Vargas got closer, he saw Nyx lying down next to a home with what looked to be gunshot wounds.

Officer Vargas then saw Trotter across the street.

Trotter fired at Officer Vargas, who returned fire.

In the exchange, Trotter was shot in the leg.

Officer Vargas then arrested Trotter after reaching his location across the street.

Trotter was given first aid at the scene by Rockford Fire before being taken to an area hospital.

Shortly after, authorities confirmed that K-9 Nyx has died due to her injuries.

On Sunday evening, law enforcement gathered as part of a procession to transport Nyx's remains.

This officer involved shooting incident is an ongoing investigation by Winnebago Boone County Integrity Task Force.
