MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- Fire crews responded to a school fire in Murphysboro on Tuesday morning.
The Murphysboro Fire Department said their firefighters responded to the Cope Alternative School on Shomaker Drive for a fire at 5:45 a.m. on March 4.
Firefighters attacked the flames on the south end of the building and the fire was quickly contained.
There was substantial damage to the building, the fire department stated.
The school principal tells News 3 the fire started at around 3:40 a.m. and the building was locked up with nobody inside at the time. The principal also said there was smoke damage throughout the building.
The principal also stated they will be resorting to e-learning for the rest of the week until they can find a new building.
Assisting the Murphysboro Fire Department at the scene was the Murphysboro Police Department, Murphysboro Emergency Management Agency and Jackson County Ambulance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
