WABASH VALLEY (WTHI) - The Illinois Attorney General is urging people to be alert for a new phone scam tactic.

You've probably heard how scammers tell victims their loved ones are in trouble. It's to get them to hand over money or personal information.

Now, it might seem even more real. Scammers can get clips of audio from social media. They can then clone those voices for scam calls.

The Illinois Attorney General says his office hasn't received direct reports of this in the state. But he wants people to be prepared in case it does happen.

If you need to find out if a call is real, the AG says to hang up and call the person back on a number you know is theirs. Also, try coming up with a family code word.
