HARRISBURG, Ill. -- Two inmates who escaped custody in Harrisburg on Friday morning are back in custody.

The Harrisburg Police Department stated at 9:06 a.m. on May 24, the Saline County Central Dispatch got a call from a correctional officer at the Illinois Youth Center in Harrisburg who reported two inmates ran away during work detail.

The report stated these two inmates were part of a work crew at the Sunset Lawn Cemetery.

A short time later, at 9:14 a.m., one deputy reportedly saw the two escapees running near the Harrisburg Middle School. The middle school then was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

More law enforcement agencies from Carrier Mills and Eldorado showed up to help.

At 9:54 a.m., law enforcement found the two escaped inmates as they were reported to be in a wooded area. They were then taken into custody, Harrisburg police said.

Assisting Harrisburg police and deputies with the Saline County Sheriff's Office, was the Eldorado Police Department, Carrier Mills Police Department, Illinois State Police, Harrisburg Fire Department, the Illinois Youth Center and members of the Harrisburg Public Properties and Street Departments.

"We would like to thank all of those agencies for their assistance in quickly getting the escapees back into custody," Harrisburg police said in a news release.
