Jackson County Health Department hosts chemical collection day for Illinois residents

Chemical collection day underway in Jackson County

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) � The Jackson County Health Department is allowing Illinois residents to properly dispose of household chemicals at a collection event in Carbondale on Saturday, June 7th.

The event will take place at the Banterra Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment only.

Accepted items include:

  • Paint thinner

  • Aerosol

  • Household cleaners

  • Pesticides, insecticides and herbicides

  • Automotive fluids

  • Rechargeable batteries

  • Solvents and polishes

  • Pool chemicals

  • Lawn chemicals

  • Oil-based paints

  • E-cigarettes

  • Propane and helium tanks

  • Mapp-gas cylinders.

  • Thermometers, thermostats, and fluorescent bulbs

Items not accepted are latex paint, explosives, ammunition, fireworks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, farm machinery oil, medical waste, electronics, alkaline and lead-acid batteries, appliances, tires, radioactive material, syringes, needles, and medical waste.

Officials say the event will remain as scheduled, regardless of rain.
