MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) - This year, the Knights of Columbus have prepared dozens of turkeys, hams, sides and desserts, in an effort to connect with their community.
They are hosting a community Thanksgiving Day dinner from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Plum Street in Murphysboro.
They hope to feed up to 600 people, but organizers say this is more than just a meal. This is a space for people to connect with each other, especially the younger and elder generations.
Cameron Donahue, President of Knights of Columbus of Murphysboro says, "we'll have the kids here and sometimes the kids are good for the older people and sometimes the older people are good for the kids. It gives them a sense of unity."
Volunteers, which include Beta Club students and children from Saint Andrews School, have been busy adding personal touches with handmade cards and festive decorations.
They hope to create lasting memories for those who need them most.
"Some people don't have anyone to fellowship with or anyone to talk to through the course of the day. This gives them a chance to get out", says Donahue.
Organizers are still in need of more help, especially for the cleanup process.
"Cleaning up after 600 meals is quite the chore so we always need help doing dishes and putting things away, says Donahue.
Volunteers can go to the Knights of Columbus Hall between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. to help out. If you can't make it to the venue, you can also request a dinner delivery by calling 618-687-2012.
So whether you’re looking for a warm meal, good company, or a way to give back, the Knights of Columbus are ready to welcome you with open arms.
