MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- Due to high winds and dry conditions, widespread burn bans are now in effect across our region, prompting local fire departments to prepare for high alert.

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for the majority of southern Illinois. This resulted in local fire authorities issuing burn bans of their own.

Tim Barnett, Chief of Marion Fire Department, says the department doesn't issue burn bans without serious consideration.

"We issued the burn ban today. We're very hesitant to issue bans, we don't like to tell people what to do. When we put it out there, it's more of a reminder to get people's attention. Just please, right now, help us, and also it'll help you guys because we were on a fire this morning, and it was a total loss," said Chief Barnett.

The burn bans prohibit all open burning, including bonfires and burning of yard waste.

Officials warn if the ban is violated, they will issue a citation. Officials stress that these fires can endanger lives and nearby structures.

Given the current high winds, even small fires can quickly escalate. Firefighters remind residents to properly dispose of smoking materials and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.

Chief Barnett says, "Right now it's, you know, super windy and going to get worse...very dry. You know, the ground might seem moist under-down, but the top side is very dry so we run into a lot of brush fires."

Burn bans are expected to remain in effect as long as winds remain high.

Residents are urged to stay updated on local fire conditions and burn bans by checking with their local county fire departments.
