BENTON, Ill. (WSIL) -- One local community gathered Thursday to throw a birthday parade for a resident turning 101 years old!

Ruth Hale lives at Heritage Woods in Benton, and the staff and other residents there wanted to make sure her birthday was a special one.

They invited Illinois Representative Dave Severin, the Benton Police and Fire Departments and many more, to make signs and drive by the facility to wish her a happy birthday.

Heritage Woods Marketing Director Lana Ray said, "We didn't tell her about the parade until this morning so it was definitely a surprise for her. She is thrilled to death. Ruth loves to be the center of attention, and we love making her that."

Rep. Severin also had a proclamation in honor of the celebration that was presented to Ruth.

She was a professional pianist before retiring and even had the opportunity to play alongside Liberace.
