(WSIL) -- Illinois Senator Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) this week attacking Gov. JB Pritzker for his handling of a COVID-19 outbreak at the . One political expert says this is just a taste of what's to come.
Bailey will face at least two challengers in the March 2022 republican primary, but the ad feels like something you'd see in November.
Political expert John Jackson, from SIU's , says the ad is about Senator Bailey trying to grow his name recognition.
"It was a fairly spirited attack on the Governor--on an issue that he's vulnerable on. The LaSalle Vets home is a legitimate issue, but Mr. Bailey is getting is getting a little ahead of the game he's got win the primary first, and there are going to be a lot of people or already or several in," Jackson said.
Jackson says attacks on Governor Pritzker are likely to increase over the next few weeks as the legislative session in Springfield winds down.
"Republicans in general are beginning to try and make the case against Governor Pritzker. You're seeing that in other legislators press releases and in what they're saying with what's going on Springfield currently."
He expects the rhetoric in Bailey's ad to be a theme going forward in the governor's race.
