PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- A local mayor is defending her decision to hold a series of conversations with the community on race relations.
Demonstrators have been holding protests in Paducah since George Floyd's death, like the one at the .
Paducah Mayor Brandi Harless is holding video conferences via Zoom with invited community members.
They include local pastors, officials and citizens who are looking to have their opinions heard.
Only ten participants are being included at a time; up to 150 total over the next month.
Harless says despite criticism about the format she feels it will be beneficial.
"We had white folks on the call hearing stories of overt subtle racism that they've never heard before and it was eye opening for some of the participants to hear but we only get those stories when we're in a safe place," she said.
The mayor is hoping to form a plan of action as a result of these meetings. Harless says there is still availability for upcoming sessions.
