CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- New efforts are underway to restore a once-thriving community center, now in disrepair, back to its purpose.
A handful of volunteers met at the Eurma C. Hayes Center in Carbondale Saturday afternoon to haul in donated kitchen equipment.
After a recent turnover in the Center's leadership, new efforts to renovate and revitalize the center have begun.
Kendall Woods, who is a board advisor, says they're still deciding what services the center will provide once updates to the building are finished.
"Possibly a day care center, maybe a small clinic, office space and classrooms," he explains. "We want to try and get this side done first and get it all cleaned out and refurbished and then we're just going to work our way through the whole building."
The organizations is hoping to complete the renovation by next fall, but that all depends on how much the community is willing to get involved.
The center is still in need of cleaning supplies, volunteers, and monetary donations to make it all come together.
