SIKESTON, Mo. -- Thousands of dollars in damage occurred to headstones in a cemetery after a vehicle crashes into them on Wednesday night.

The Sikeston Department of Public Safety stated they were called to a crash at the Sikeston Memorial Park Cemetery at around 9 p.m. on July 3.

Once officers got to the scene, they found a vehicle ran through a line of trees and crashed into several headstones.

Police said the driver was a 38-year-old man and the vehicle was in gear when he reported to have had a seizure and inadvertently hit the gas pedal and crashed into the cemetery.

Authorities said several granite grave markers were hit, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

The driver was flown out to a hospital where he was treated and then released.

Sikeston DPS and the owners of the cemetery are still assessing the damage and working to identify all family members.

Police said a report was entered in reference to the driver's condition to suspend any driving until he is evaluated by medical professionals and the Missouri Department of Revenue.
