WOLF LAKE (WSIL) â€ Superintendent Shelly Clover-Hill says her district means a lot to her so she tries her best to keep everyone safe and stress-free.Â
Clover-Hill says, "We are like a family and everybody knows everybody and we take care of everybody."
She says receiving the proper funding is a big concern.
In 2015 The Grand Tower Energy Center had financial issues putting a burden on the Shawnee School District. More than half the district’s annual revenue comes from property taxes, and 58 percent of the property taxes are from the power plant.
Clover-Hill explains, "So payroll, transportation, lunch and breakfast, utilities, everything that it needs to operate a school district."
Clover Hill says the district hired a lobbyist to try to get emergency funding from the state and she hopes they get it.
She says, "We’re asking for special language to be drafted and included in the Illinois state funding formula. That addresses emergency catastrophic events for school districts like ours that have lost their tax base."
Clover-Hill worries if the district doesn’t get the funding the school will have many more challenges ahead. She encourages people in the district to contact their local lawmakers and advocate for Shawnee School District.
Lawmakers are expected to return to session next week.
