CARBONDALE, Ill (WSIL) February is Black History Month, and Southern Illinois University is making sure the celebration is more than just a reflection on the past—by being a launchpad for the future. With events planned every day, organizers aim to educate, empower, and inspire students while honoring Black culture and history.

One unique event, an etiquette dinner, is designed to equip students with the tools they need to confidently navigate professional settings—because sometimes, knowing which fork to use can make a lasting impression.

“College affords you opportunities to be in different circles, opportunities to network, and opportunities to expand your horizons. So in that your circle changes, and I'm a strong believer that education changes your social mobility, said Paul Frazier, Vice Chancellor for Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. He emphasized that preparing students for life beyond the classroom is at the heart of SIU’s mission.

Frazier also praised the university’s leadership for its unwavering support of Black History Month programming.

“The way our leadership is set, from the top down, embraces history, embraces culture, and embraces inclusivity, he said.

SIU’s month-long celebration includes performances, panel discussions, and community events that recognize Black excellence—not just in history, but in everyday life.

“It’s so much to celebrate, to embrace our community, Frazier shared. “It goes beyond 28 days, but it’s great to highlight this month.

Tomorrow night’s etiquette dinner is just one example of how SIU is using Black History Month to provide practical, real-world skills that will benefit students long after February ends.

The etiquette dinner will take place from 4:30-7:00 p.m. in the Old Main Lounge at the SIU Student Center.
