CARBONDALE (WSIL)---The Fall 2021 semester has thrown curveballs at SIU students.

The pandemic is already stressful for students, but after the tragic loss of three students and a recent graduate, the administration canceled classes for the day.

But administrators say, was the students who pushed for the day off.

"None of this would have happened without the students. This was a student led iniatiative, this was something that they asked for and I have really enjoyed over the last couple of weeks getting to meet with the students, often, to really look at how do we partner for this," said Jaime Clark, the Director of Student Health Services at SIU.

With classes canceled, students got the opportunity to recharge, and many appreciated the University's efforts to listen to the needs of students.

"I think it's a good option, we definitely need more mental health services, and it's nice to have a break, especially since it's on a Friday, we get a longer weekend," said junior Trinity Kirby.

"I think they're doing a good job responding to it. If I was in the upper levels' shoes, I wouldn't really know what to do either, but I think it's nice that they're acknowledging it," sophomore Maryn Ellis said.

"It could be organized a little better but I think it's beneficial for the students to have some time off to enjoy their day and destress a little bit," said sophomore Anthony Fanelli.

A large concern came out about counseling services, with students becoming worried the excess amount of people seeking help would cause longer wait times.

SIU guarantees any student at SIU can seek same day services if needed.

"Any student can be seen any day, and be seen that day when they walk in. We will not turn a student away, and we have multiple locations on campus where students can call and be seen that day," said Clark.

And while classes were only canceled for today, the administration asks students to reach out if they still need help.

"I'm just so amazed with their strength at this time and being able to advocate for themselves and their fellow salukis at this time, it's awesome," said Clark.

SIU also hosted relaxation and de-stressing activities throughout campus for students.
