DU QUOIN, Ill. (WSIL) -- Du Quoin is gearing up for the return of the Street Machine Nationals this weekend. The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds will host thousands of street machines, hot rods, muscle cars, and trucks from all over the country.

Mayor Josh Downs highlighted the event's history in Du Quoin and the local excitement for its comeback.

"The people that live in Du Quoin or in the region obviously have that nostalgia, so it kind of brings back memories from their childhood or early adult years and so that's what we count on to get people here."

Beyond showcasing impressive vehicles, Mayor Downs also emphasized the significant positive economic impact the large crowds bring to the community. He says he anticipates 20,000 to 40,000 attendees throughout the weekend, providing a boost to local businesses such as gas stations, restaurants, and hotels.

Tomahawk Bar and Grill, a local establishment in its first year during the Street Machine Nationals, is looking forward to serving as a place for visitors to eat, relax, and watch the cars go by.

Larry Hale, a cook at the grill, believes the event is beneficial for the entire city. "It helps out the whole city of Du Quoin, we really need stuff like this to help us keep building and we want a positive attitude, we want this to keep building from year to year," said Hale.

He says they are preparing for the influx of people with extra outdoor seating and weekend specials.

The weekend promises food, family entertainment, and plenty of horsepower, with the action taking place from May 2nd to May 4th at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds.
