JACKSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- A woman and a child are dead following a two-car crash in rural Jackson County on Thanksgiving.

Deputies responded to a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Old Highway 13 and Country Club Road in rural Murphysboro just after 5:34 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff's office.

Evidence at the scene found that a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Christopher G. Cross, 26, of Murphysboro, was heading east on Old Highway 13 when the vehicle lost control and crossed into the westbound lane.

It then struck a westbound black 2002 Ford F-150 driven by Jeffrey Weiher, 30, of Hobart, Indiana.

Investigators identified the passengers in the Impala as Ashley Segler, 23, of Murphysboro, and four children under the age of 5. They were all transported from the scene by ambulance.

Segler was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Two children were airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital in critical condition. One of the children later died from their injuries.

Weiher and his passengers, Sally Morrow, 31, of Carbondale, and Tyler Weiher, 27, of Lasalle, Ill., were treated at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for non-life threatening injuries.

Jackson County Ambulance Service and the Murphysboro-Pomona-Somerset Township Fire Department also responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
