MARION (WSIL) -- The Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), has awarded grants to 13 communities, including the city of Marion, to improve neighborhood housing.
DCEO estimates more than 125 homes will benefit, totaling over $6.3 million.
The grants assist low-to-moderate income homeowners who need better living conditions. State administered funds are available for communities who do not receive their own Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Officials spent months surveying 10 homes in the Midway Court area. Each home received up to $25,000 dollars for plumbing, roofing, new windows and more.
Marion Chief of Staff Cody Moake says he never passes up an opportunity to reinvest in the community.
"It's consistent with our vision of beautifying Marion and being able to help our residents fix up their homes," he said.
Residents in the area that participated in the Housing Needs survey will be contacted via mail.
