PADUCAH, Ky. (WSIL) -- Our region has experienced a significant increase in tornado activity this year, ranking third for the most tornadoes recorded in a single year, according to the National Weather Service in Paducah.
The 58-county area has seen more than 550 miles of tornado tracks, shattering the previous record from 14 years ago.
The 58-county region has recorded 54 tornadoes in 2025. This marks the third-highest number of tornadoes for any year on record in the area, trailing 59 tornadoes in 2024 and 79 in 2011 taking the first and second spots respectively. However, we still have seven months left of 2025.
The total distance of tornado tracks reached 557.8 miles, surpassing the previous record of 449.8 miles set in 2011, the National Weather Service reported. This year has also witnessed nine EF-3 or stronger tornadoes, the most in a single year since 1957.
Breaking down the numbers for this year, Missouri experienced 22 tornadoes, Illinois had 16, Kentucky recorded 11, and Indiana saw 7. This uptick in tornado activity underscores the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the region.
