4 local charities receive $45,000 from Southern Illinois Chili Cook Off
MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- Four local charities received $45,000 for the Southern Illinois Chili Cook Off.
Dozens gathered at the Elks in Marion to see the check presentations from Southern Illinois Chili Cook Off Thursday. Megan Zeller is the President of the Southern Illinois Chili Cook Off. She explained why they have the event at the Marion Elks.
"Originally we had it at a local facility that was own by Molly Puckett and that ended up closing so, we moved the event here and that's how it happened," said Zeller.
One of the goals officials have is to support our local community. Vice President Dave Fry said they did just that.
"It has been our main focus is making sure that all of our money stays local," said Fry. "It is a local event we have local volunteers so we ant to support the local charities so it feels great," said Fry.
Four local charities were each presented a check of $11,250. Those organizations were the Fowler Bonan Foundation, The Lighthouse Shelter, the Marion Elks Community Project Inc., and Heartland Rotary. Officials from those organizations say they are more than grateful.
"Our goal is always just to do our best and try to raise as much money as possible to provide for as many families that we can across Southern Illinois," said Chairman Dale Fowler of the Fowler Bonan Foundation.
"This fundraiser has been a God sent to us because they do such a great job in what they raise and its just been all our expenses you know for the year," said Wanda Zwick President of Lighthouse Shelter.
"It's incredible actually because we do so much out in the community and so for the community to come here and support us and this effort every year is just amazing," said Michelle Hamilton Officer for the Elks.
Officials from the event said they are happy for success they have had in past years and look forward to more successful years to come.
