Body found in Mississippi River identified, ISP investigating

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- Authorities in Cape Girardeau responded to a report of a body found in the Mississippi River on Tuesday.

Cape Girardeau Police said this was near the Redstar area.

Officers from the Cape Girardeau Police Department and personnel from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department responded to the scene around 9 a.m. on April 22.

The deceased was identified as 52-year-old Shane Barendregt.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy. Police said the autopsy has been scheduled for April 24.

Illinois State Police tells us this man fell into the river after a pursuit. This was in the St. Louis area last week.

ISP says the investigation is active and ongoing.
