CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL)-- The Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois is making a comeback.
They hosted a soft opening tonight at their new location, the First United Methodist Church, in Carbondale.Â
Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois CEO LaShonda Hubert says they will be using a wing of the church to provide their services.Â
“It has classroom space, a gymnasium, and a state-of-the-art kitchen that they can take advantage of. So I think that the children and the community will be very, very happy with the space, Hubert said.
Families could see the new space, interact with community organizations, and sign up for membership.Â
“It's a milestone because we have gone through a rough patch, but we are back and we are here to stay. We will provide dynamic programming and make sure that we stay in the community to support our working families, especially,â€ Hubert said.Â
The organization also hosted a ribbon cutting for their location in Marion on October 29th. Hubert says their goal is to support the needs of each community.Â
“It's important that we meet the needs of the community and that looks different depending on the community, Hubert says. “So we wanna make sure that we are very specific and intentional about bringing the services that are necessary for each community.
At the open house, some returning members of Carbondale Boys and Girls Club came out to see the new location.Â
Gabriella Johnson is ready for the club to come back to the area. She has been a member of the club for 6 years.
“And it has been really fun. I basically grew up with the Boys and Girls Club, and so I am happy that it is returning, Johnson said.
She says it has been a place she’s felt comfortable to talk about her emotions.
“I especially like how they never really made you feel upset. It's somewhere you go and you're like upset and you can just talk to them about it. And it's something I really like about the Boys and Girls Club. So I'm sure anybody who decides to come here would be really happy, Johnson said.
After touring the club's new home Johnson says she is looking forward to using the library.
The Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois plans to open officially before the end of the year.Â
