Boil water order

CAIRO, Ill. -- Work on water pipes in Cairo will result in a mandatory water boil order for residents beginning Monday.

Illinois American Water plans to replace pipe connections and conduct other mandatory work starting Monday at 9:00 a.m. While residents will receive a personal notification of the order on Monday, the water company plans for this to affect the entire system in the Cairo District.

Officials urge residents under the order to boil all water for at least five minutes before drinking or cooking. The order does not apply to water used for baths or washing.

The order will remain in place as long as water pressure remains below 20 pounds per square inch along the distribution route. Officials expect this to last for a number of days but will notify residents when the pressure rises above the threshold.
